Concept Note :

The Northeast region of India has been a land of enduring resistance, where the spirit of freedom and self-determination took root long before the advent of British rule. The proposed National seminar aims to explore this rich continuum of defiance – from ancient and medieval assertions of sovereignty to organized anti-colonial struggles under British rule. The valiant stand of King Prithu against early Islamic invaders and the indomitable courage of Lachit Borphukan in defending Assamese sovereignty against the Mughals exemplify the deep-seated ethos of freedom that defines the region’s historical consciousness. Such examples of resistance equally resonate across other states of the Northeast, reflecting a legacy of courage and collective will to preserve their autonomy and cultural identity.

These early traditions of resistance evolved into later movements against British imperialism, reflecting a seamless legacy of valour, unity, and cultural pride. The seminar seeks to bring together academicians, historians, researchers, students and freedom fighters to examine how these struggles- whether through arms, reforms, or ideas that shaped the region’s identity and contributed to India’s broader freedom movement. By integrating oral traditions, folklore, and archival narratives, the seminar aspires to reconstruct an inclusive historiography that acknowledges the Northeast not as a peripheral participant, but as a vital force in India’s longjourney towards Freedom.
